Matthew West - Unplanned

Matthew West, active since 1997, has found tremendous success as a Christian singer. A number of his songs will be featured on this blog at some point.

Temperament that it hits on: Choleric

Unplanned hits on my choleric because I will not lie around while babies are being murdered, and this song fuels my faith and determination in that fight.

Matthew West's song Unplanned appears at the end of the Unplanned movie, which reveals the truth about planned parenthood and the backstory of pro-life advocate Abby Johnson. It is a good song. It thoroughly answers the most debated issue in modern society in but three minutes and 20 seconds.

  1. I personally do not like christian rock. It doesn't interest me much musically, so I prefer to just stick to hymns.

What other types of music do you like? I especially like rock, physchedelic (not even going to try to spell that right)rock, jazz, really almost every type of music except death metal, rap, hip-hop, and most modern music.

Christian rock just seems one-dimensional to me. Also, most of the songs are written by protestants, and so sometimes the theology is off.

2 songs I really like that kind of describe me:

I Am The Cosmos-Chris Bell. About insecurity.
Waterloo Sunset- The Kinks. Basically an introverted melancholic song.

Those two are great musically, and if you like them they might deserve a post on your blog.

    1. I know that most Christian songs are written by Protestants, so I am always very careful about what I listen to. Matt Maher is a Catholic, however, and he'll get three songs (as of right now). I mostly like respectable rock music, 1940's jazz, 1950's songs, Christian music, Tom Petty.

    2. Tom Petty's certainly pretty good. The 1950s have some good stuff too. On Saturday's, from 10-12 AM, the radio station 89.3 has "The Magic Time-Warp Show", with music primarily from the '50s. If you like '50s music, you might enjoy that.

What are favorite bands? Because categories like respectable rock music and 1940s jazz aren't very specific.

For me, rock: The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Big Star, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Cream, The Grateful Dead, David Bowie, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, The Zombies, Spirit, Led Zeppelin, and many others.

For jazz I primarily like Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Vince Guaraldi, John Coltrane, and Wes Montgomery.

  2. My favorites are Journey, Chuck Berry, Johnny Horton, Petty, Matthew West, Matt Maher, U2, For King & Country, tobyMac, and others like them. Bobby Hackett's 1947 work Soft Lights And Sweet Music is a good one and will be featured on this blog. Les Brown's A Foggy Day may end up here, too.

    1. Ah, U2. My mom likes U2, but she's the only one in my family who does. I've heard some King & Country b/c of my sister, not very impressed. I might have to check out the jazz guys you mentioned.

By the way, here's some songs you should really listen to:

Wes Montgomery: The End of a Love Affair, Satin Doll, Missile Blues
Thelonius Monk: Caravan, Mood Indigo, Blue Bolivar Blues
The Beatles: And Your Bird Can Sing, Taxman, Baby You're a Rich Man
Simon and Garfunkel: Mrs. Robinson, I Am A Rock,
      Spirit: Uncle Jack
The Kinks: Waterloo Sunset, Sunny Afternoon
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme (full album)
      Cream : White Room, SWLABR
Big Star: All of first two albums

Oh you, I've heard some Chuck Berry songs too. "Nadine" is good, and I've heard "Johnny B Goode" too.

If you listen to some of those, I might give some of your bands a try.

    2. Well, you're in luck because "Johnny B. Goode" will be featured here, and I will take a look at some of your suggestions, especially since The Kinks are a band that I know of and trust to be pretty good. The Beatles have a couple of good songs, and one (as of right now) will be featured here. And when you look at the two jazz pieces I told you about, you will not be disappointed.

    3. The Beatles have " a couple of good songs"? That's like saying Mozart had a few good pieces.

My count of the Beatles' good songs, album by album, starting with Revolver:

      Revolver: 10
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: 8
      Magical Mystery Tour: 8
      The White Album: 16
      Abbey Road: 8

So that's 50 good songs over 5 albums. Obviously, some of that is subjective, but most are no-doubters, and I don't include some that others might.
